Agroforestry in cocoa cultivation
Cocoa and cocoa-based ingredients used in our portfolio are a significant contributor to Hero’s carbon footprint, and come from regions with increased social and environmental risks. Beside our Rainforest Alliance certification, Hero has joined two programs to promote responsible sourcing.
In line with our internal guidelines, we purchase 100% of our cocoa-based ingredients with Rainforest Alliance or Fairtrade certification (Mass Balance).
In addition to those certifications, we have joined two additional programs to enhance transparency in our cocoa supply chain. Apart from providing significant community support, including initiatives to prevent child labor and improve economic opportunities for women, they also have environmental benefits.
Participating cocoa farms, which are deforestation-free verified through appropriate monitoring, promote agricultural practices that have reduced greenhouse gas emissions beyond the requirements of our existing Rainforest Alliance certification.
Through our investments, we contribute to around 170 hectares of cocoa plantations, applying agroforestry practices as a nature-based solution to increased biodiversity, soil health, and to sequester carbon.
