Hero Benelux history
Hero has existed in the Netherlands for more than 100 years. Founded in Switzerland in 1886, a partnership was formed with a small factory in Breda making jams and fruit pulp in 1914, creating Hero Conserven in Breda. One thing has remained the same in all these years: our passion for fruit and baby food. Discover here what the most important milestones have been in the past decades.

Hero was founded in 1886. The first factory was located in Lenzburg, Switzerland, where fruit and vegetables were processed.

The cannery entered into a partnership with the Jansen family's fruit and vegetable business in Breda in 1914. The company made fruit pulp and jams, mainly from strawberries, raspberries, and berries. Hero soon made a name for itself with its good quality and wide range of products.

In the 1930s, Hero starts producing soft drinks. Hero Perl was the first, a lightly carbonated apple soft drink. Even bigger hits soon followed, such as Hero Sinas, Hero Cassis, and Hero Cerise.

With the introduction of Hero FruitOntbijt in 1998, Hero started a direction of innovative fruit products that are responsible and delicious. In subsequent years, Hero Fruit2day, Hero Fruit&CO, and Hero B'tween, among others, were added.

In 2007, Hero Benelux broadened its horizons. With Friso, Hero Benelux, like its parent organization Hero Group, also focused on infant nutrition.

As an extension of infant nutrition, Hero Benelux markets Organix Goodies in the Netherlands with a portfolio of tasty and responsible snacks for babies and toddlers.

To make our products even healthier, we started a new natural route for Hero Fruit in 2013. The recipes and packaging of all products have been improved and renewed.

In 2014, Hero celebrated 100 years with all employees and externally with great activities for all our loyal fans and future consumers. In the same year, Friso became Hero Baby. Hero Nederland changed the name of its existing Friso Flesvoeding brand to Hero Baby in March 2014. With the name change, Hero gave shape to its ambition to give all its products the same familiar name and image for consumers.

Hero Group sold its Breda factory, where chilled juices were produced, to the Belgian Konings group in July. Konings is an independent co-packer of various products such as ciders, drinks and juices. Konings Drinks B.V. started producing Hero Benelux after the sale. There was no change to the Hero Benelux portfolio. Also in 2015, Nutrasense was introduced. In addition to the familiar Hero Baby products, Hero Benelux expanded its range with Hero Baby Nutrasense, which contains milk fat and also the familiar nutrients such as vitamins A, C & D.

Hero Cassis is perhaps our best-known product. It has played an important role in our history since 1938. Our blackcurrants come from Dutch soil, the fertile clay soil of Zeeland from Heinkenszand and Lewedorp.

The sale concerns the products FruitOntbijt and FruitSap along with the recipes and trademarks. With this transaction, we fulfilled our strategy to further invest in the remaining categories; Drinks, Healthy Snacks, Natural Spreads, Hero Baby and Organix.
