Mono-Material Pouches: driving circularity in packaging
At Hero, we identified packaging as a significant contributor to our environmental footprint and made sustainable packaging a strategic priority. We are committed to reducing virgin material use, increasing recycled content, and designing all packaging for recyclability. One of our latest milestones is the launch of fully recyclable pouches made from mono-material.
This redesign brings two major benefits. First, by switching from multi-material to single-material films, our pouches are now ready for recycling in established systems. Second, by rethinking the cap and spout design, we achieved a 20% reduction in material use per pouch compared to previous versions. To enable this transition, the Hero Group invested in a new, energy-efficient factory in Murcia, Spain, with the capacity to produce 180 million mono-material pouches annually.
Our approach is holistic, considering the entire lifecycle of packaging, from design to end-of-life recycling. We closely monitor evolving regulations and local recycling infrastructure to ensure compliance and maximize environmental benefits. This initiative is part of our broader circularity strategy, which also includes reducing glass jar weight and optimizing all packaging for resource efficiency. The mono-material pouch launch is a tangible step toward a circular economy, reducing waste and supporting Hero’s long-term sustainability goals.
